Discover Ways You Can Make An Impact...

Vegetables

Eat More Plants & Less Meat

By eating more vegetables you'll naturally begin to consume less meat. They're good for you too. Why not try Meatless Mondays?

Domestic Waste Bin

Get Composting

Consider buying a home composting bin or even a wormery if there are no compost collections in your area. It ensures that compostable waste doesn't end up in landfill where it releases methane. Methane is an even more potent greenhouse gas than CO2.

Shopping

Buy Less

This one is simple. Across the board, buy less. If you need to buy something try to buy things that will last. Don't buy things that you don't need that will just sit in the corner, eventually ending up in landfill.

People Walking

Think Transport

When thinking of how you'll get somewhere, first consider walking or cycling, then public transportation.

If you find you need to drive a lot, consider changing to a fully-electric vehicle (if you can).

Stop the Straw

Simple enough, no straws. No plastic straws, and the paper ones aren't fantastic either so why bother use it at all?

If you love straws, bring your own reusable around with you!

Get a Reusable Water Bottle

The easiest way to reduce your single use plastic consumption is to get a reusable water bottle. We promise you it is completely worth the initial investment. Klean Kanteen bottles are fantastic, while we like these Kai Bottles from a small Dublin business.

Girl with Shopping Bags

Avoid Fast Fashion

Invest in long lasting, timeless pieces that will wear well & carry you from season to season.

Buying pre-loved clothing is a great option too!

Traffic

Avoid Idling Your Car

When you arrive at your destination try to remember to turn off the car engine. It saves on your fuel bill. It helps improve air quality. Idling your engine creates more emissions than driving. When a car is being driven the engine heats up faster and the catalytic converter becomes more efficient at reducing emissions.

Dry Cleaned Shirts

Dry Cleaning

Most dry cleaners still use perc - pretty unpleasant chemicals. These chemicals stay in your clothes for months and are nasty for the environment and those working with them. Give the the plastic bag covering the clothes a skip too. Use your own or ask for a reusable one.

Lawn Mower Setup

Don't Mow Your Lawn ...

... Until September.

Let the dandelions (now categorised as wildflowers, not weeds) and clover and other wildflowers that feed bees and pollinators love, have a chance to grow. Avoid pesticides and fertilisers. Even an area of lawn left wild is a good start.

Have a Lightbulb Moment

Change over to LED light bulbs. Lighting accounts for 10% of people's electricity bills and using LEDs can reduce costs by up to 80% of light costs in the home. They also last so much longer than conventional lightbulbs.

Turn Your Heating Down by 1°

Turning down the temperature in your home by just one degree saves an abundance of energy, thus money, and we think you won't even notice the difference.

Cosmetic Bottles

Extended Producer Responsibility

Pressure manufacturers and brands to take responsibility for the waste they produce.

Push them to think more about the environment and climate change.

Tote Bag

Bring Your Own Bag

Don't forget your own bag when you're going shopping. Hemp or jute bags are even better than organic cotton totes.

Paying

Buy The Change

Use the power of your wallet. Where you can, buy the change you want to see. Support brands that operate in a more eco-aware way. Be vigilant of green-washing (when brands pretend to be more green than they are).

Think Circular

Buy things made of recycled materials rather than virgin materials. The Ellen MacArthur Foundation is a fantastic resource on circular consumption.

Empty Plastic Bottles

Ditch The Crisps & Soft Drinks

Crisp bags/packets are almost impossible to recycle - do your health and planet a favour until manufacturers find a better packaging solution.

We all love a fizzy drink every now and then, but the plastic bottles they come in are a big no-no. Coca-Cola sells 108 Billion plastic bottles every year!

Community Garden

Get Involved in Your Community

Get involved in your local community to see how you can make a difference. For example, you could join a local clean-up initiative in your area, or join in some beach clean-ups..

Light Less Fires

If you can't resist lighting a fire, use kiln dried wood, NOT coal. Light them less often. If you have a stove, the same applies, and make sure it has an eco-rating.

Plant a Tree (or a Forest!!)

If you have the space for it, plant a tree, or two in your garden. They look pretty, provide shade in summer months & are good for the environment.

Support companies/ brands that are carbon neutral.
Consider setting a goal for your own home/business/school/organisation to become carbon neutral.

Be Inspired by Zero Waste Advocates

Be inspired by people like Bea Johnson, who's entire generated waste in one year is represented by only one jar, as seen here. You don't have to go fully zero waste, but there is a lot we can all learn!

Swap Out Your Boiler

Make the move to geothermal or air to water heat pumps.

Due to highly stable temperatures below the earth’s surface, ground source heat pumps provide high levels of efficiency for space and water heating all year round

Chimney and Sky

Use a Chimney Sheep

Stop warm air from escaping up your chimney, and cold draughts from moving down your chimney into your home. Reduce your heating bill & your carbon footprint at the same time!
